Bali - Construction and Renovation

Weekly Schedule & Activities

Monday
On Monday, after breakfast, you would start planning the project with the coordinator assigned to you. After planning and receiving the relevant information, you can have lunch. After lunch, you will leave to your assigned community location. Once your time at the location ends, you can then return to the Center and attend a meeting where you can provide feedback regarding the first day at your placement.

Tuesday to Friday
You will have some free-time after you have your breakfast. After lunch, you will leave for your assigned community location where you will be able to do numerous construction and renovation activities which would truly leave a positive impact over the communities in need.

Evenings & Weekends
During the evenings the volunteers are generally free, and there are no program activities scheduled unless otherwise mentioned. Weekends are always free.

This schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on weather conditions, local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

Optional Culture Week

This program can also include a Culture Week which is highly recommended but not mandatory - just inform your travel advisor if you wish to include it. Indonesia is one of the most interesting countries in the world for cultural learning and experiences, which means that this week is packed full of exciting adventures, cultural excursions and interactions.

During the Culture Week you will be participating in various activities to get you acquainted with the Balinese culture. You will study the Balinese language, and explore Ubud including the famous Monkey Street as well as the beautiful surrounding areas. Bali is renowned for its diverse and sophisticated art forms, such as painting, sculpture, wood carving, handicrafts and performing arts, so we'll have you challenge your artistic and creative side with traditional Batik painting. Another fun thing to try out is a Balinese cooking class. Finally, you will make a traditional flower offering and offer your creation at one of the most impressive Balinese temples: The Holy Tirta Empul Temple. We take a short spiritual tour around this famous temple, bathe in holy waters and pray for good luck. Evenings during the Culture Week and the weekend after are free unless otherwise mentioned.

Public Holidays

Day of Silence (Nyepi) is a Hindu ceremony reserved for self-reflection. This takes place from 06:00 on 10 March until 06:00 on 12 March 2024. On Nyepi Day, the project as well as the airport, shops and businesses are closed, and everyone must stay at home. The day before Nyepi you will take part in the preparations and the day after there is a ceremony in the morning. If participants will arrive to Bali on 10th March 2024, we recommend them to arrive before 15:00 or after 23:00 because everywhere on the island, there will be Ogoh Ogoh parades and ceremonies from 15:00-23:00. There will be heavy traffic and close road.

However, please still check please with your airlines and the country's health guidelines on this matter.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Overnatting

You will be accommodated in one of our houses in the village of Pejeng Kaja. Located on the outskirts of Ubud, village life is quintessentially local here and you will get a good chance to see typical Balinese life - roosters crowing and all! There are two centers in Pejeng which are specially furnished for the participants’ accommodation, namely Santi Rahayu and Melati.

The accommodation has dormitory-style rooms with fans (4-8 persons). The bathroom is shared with a hot water shower and western toilet. Bed linens are included, but not towels. There are also safety boxes, so please bring a padlock.

There is Wi-Fi in public areas at the volunteer accommodation and there are great internet cafes in Ubud if you would like access to a higher speed connection.

All facilities that you could want are within easy access of our accommodation. There are ATMs and minimarts within a 5-minute walk.

All participants are expected to be environmentally responsible and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and tidy.

Lokal transport

Arrival Information
We only receive participants on the Sunday before the program begins. The pick-up time from Denpasar Airport is between 00:00 and 23:59. Our representative will be waiting for you at the International Arrival Flight Information Center at Denpasar Airport. Please look for your name board.

You may need to wait for several participants to arrive before the group leaves the airport.

If you're traveling to Denpasar Bali overland, we can arrange a pick-up at the following meeting points:
- Bintang Supermarket in Ubud at 14:00 on Sundays (Address: Jl. Raya Sanggingan No.45 Ubud, Bali 80515, Indonesia)

Our coordinator can help you with the different transportation options, but you will have to cover the cost.

Måltider

3 meals during weekday are provided (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and 2 meals during the weekend (breakfast, dinner).

Indonesian food is tasty and diverse and you can expect to experience a myriad of flavors and meals during their stay. Typical dishes included mie goreng (fried noodles and vegetables), nasi goreng (fried rice and vegetables) or gado gado (mixed vegetables with a satay sauce). For those who do not eat meat, Indonesian cooking uses a lot of tofu and tempeh (soybeans), we also provide for some of western dishes. Breakfasts are varied and include pancakes, fresh fruit, toast etc. Tea, coffee and purified water is available at the house. We do not recommend that you drink the tap water.

Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or intolerances during your application. However, we need to stress the point that you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but also as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible and accommodating to the local food.

Please note all meals are served at our centre in buffet style.
