The initiator of this project is a local Galapagos family with a great heart for all arts and a belief that when the people that live on the Galapagos Islands have more feeling with and knowledge about their island, great problems will be solved. One of the major problems they see in their daily living on the island is that even though people on the Galapagos live in a unique place in the world, within the educational system this is not a focus point. The conservation program will create a place for volunteers and locals to come together to learn and share ideas about conservation and traditions. The first phase is restoring the land back to it’s natural habitat.
The activities that volunteers carry out are varied and numerous, they include:
- Reforestation - volunteers help to eliminate introduced/invasive plant species and then restore native and endemic species.
- Improve trails and paths around the plots of the lands.
- Work in the plant nursery either on the land or in the Galapagos National Park. Grow and nurture native plants in the nursery and then move them to their permanent locations.
- Help to grow and cut down plants used as food for the Galapagos National Park tortoise breeding centers.
The more hard work you put into the project the more reward you get! Show initiative, work independently and don’t be afraid of working hard. They need all the help you can give them.
