Monkey Sanctuary

Project Highlights

- History of primates and their fight against survival
- Learning more about the different primates-
- In-house training of volunteers to become Primate Guides
- Educating tourists about these unique project

Our unique primate sanctuary is currently the top eco-tourism attraction on the Garden Route and for very sound and sunny reasons. Monkey sanctuary has captured the hearts of visitors in its efforts to rehabilitate and free previously caged primates. The sanctuary is exceptional as it caters for several species of primates who are not caged. They are free to move about the forest and this they do most harmoniously.

The emphasis on searching for the primates, and the reward is to see the various species as they are meant to be: free and in a natural habitat. The transfer of information about these fascinating creatures enhances your visit to the sanctuary during a safari. The safaris are conducted by multi-lingual game rangers and are fun, exciting and educational. Our guests leave our sanctuary with a greater understanding of the primates of the world and the threats they are facing.

Weekly Schedule & Activities

- Cleaning the forest
- Walk-in of clients
- Guided tours after training has be done
- Feeding the primates
- Cleaning the cages
- Assisting with translation of marketing materials
- Photography
- Feeding the primates in the special monkey home

Volunteer Positions

Volunteers will be considered if they are hard-working, enthusiastic and prepared to cheerfully fulfill tasks such as walking tourists from our entrance gate to the reception area whilst explaining the basic sanctuary rules on the way, translating documents, webarticles and info sheets, photographing or filming the sanctuary animals and/or assisting with the animal care. However, we are particularly keen to fill the following positions:

Multilingual Rangers/Guides:
The Big Cats, Bird & Monkey Wildlife Sanctuaries fund themself through revenues from tourists who take educational tours in our forests that are home to over 550 primates, more than 3500 birds and several dozen predator cats and other wildlife. The tours at each sanctuary are approximately one hour long and must leave the tourists with general primate and/or bird and/or predator cat knowledge, information about each of the species that could be located in the sanctuary and an understanding that wild animals do not make good pets and are happier in the trees, forests and bushveld with peers of their own species. German, Dutch, Spanish, Russian, Hindi, Hebrew, Portuguese and Italian guides are particularly in demand, but any knowledgeable person who can use entertainment to further environmental awareness will be considered.

Our goal for the Big Cats, Monkey & Bird Sanctuaries is to include an education centre especially for children to learn about nature, recycling, gardening, pollution, conservation and of course predators primates and birds. There are many projects to be done.

Photographer & Film Maker:
A comprehensive catalogue of all the predators, birds and money residents has not yet been made and most of the information about our primates, birds and predator cats exists only in the notebooks and minds of our keepers, curators and founders. Compiling and typing up this information, along with taking photographs and film footage of individual primates, birds and predator cats is an important big project that we would like to begin asap, but volunteers would need to bring their own photographic equipment, since the sanctuary video camera is a rather primitive one.

Ideally, the applicants for this position would also have experience in collecting and analysing behavioural data about primate, birds and/or predator cats. Close cooperation with our knowledgeable keepers and curators is imperative and will certainly be highly educational for any wildlife enthusiast.

IT Specialist:
There’s a whole bunch of equipment that needs servicing and regular fixing in our offices and reception areas, so if you have extensive working knowledge of computers but nonetheless wish to live in a beautiful natural environment with a chance to help out on outdoor projects whenever computers and time allow, then this is the perfect place for you. We also need someone to assist with social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Joomla!, Wikipedia, Wordpress, Tripadvisor, MySpace, Nutshell mail, Wikipedia, blogs, LinkedIn etc.

Public Relations/Marketing/Journalist:
The 3 wildlife sanctuaries depend on visitor interest to fund itself. Therefore, PR and marketing are extremely important for raising awareness about our projects. Stories can be written about our primates, birds and predator cats from a myriad of different angles for a huge variety of readerships and publications.

This position would be ideal for a young wildlife journalist who would like to gain experience in writing, photography, getting published in different sorts of publications, writing press releases (e.g. when new primates and/or birds and/or predator cats which are born or arrive at the sanctuary), encouraging professional journalists to write about us, taking journalists on special tours etc.

Our sanctuaries take a very modern approach to publicity and we try hard to balance out entertainment and education to reach as many people as possible in our quest to educate the general public about the plight of primates, birds and predator cats. Working closely with our marketing manager will prove to be fun and enlightening for any primate enthusiast with a gift for writing.

Veterinarian:
Although we are extremely happy with the skills and enthusiasm of our local vets in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, there is no on-site vet and the keepers and curators must on occasion tackle medical issues themselves. Regular monitoring of the health of over our 550+ primates many different species could be a full-time task. Since we advocate leaving the animals in their free-roaming environment as much as possible, medical intervention would only occasionally be necessary. Therefore, any applicant for this position must also be happy to fulfil other tasks such as guided tours. Our volunteer vet must be experienced and able to work closely with our local vets, which will be a highly enjoyable and educational experience. Ditto re volunteering in this position with our the variety of birds and predator cats.

Handyman:
Volunteer carpenters, gardeners, electricians, plumbers, painters etc. are always welcome.

Is There a Potential Risk?

Yes. Working with wild animals is always a risk, so proper care and training are adhered to. Generally, HIV/AIDS is extremely prevalent in South Africa, so it is your personal responsibility to take care with regards to health and safety, as well as sexual relationships.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.
