The Pre-Vet Project is designed for interns, volunteers and young professionals looking to explore or enter the professional fields of veterinary science, animal welfare and animal management. Categorized into three distinct learning areas, we provide a theoretical and hands-on approach to learning as it applies to African wildlife, agricultural livestock and domestic animals.

Achieving our objectives require you to experience and interact with wildlife in a game reserve context, livestock within the farming context and domestic animals within South Africa’s rural village context, where many animals live in an uncared for manner and animal rights are low on the social agenda.

This experience is of a real, working, conservation and wildlife management program. It can often be exhilarating when working with game capture and release, elephant and buffalo tracking with telemetry. Then again, some days can be a stretch and even laborious at times when trekking perimeter fences and hunting for traps. However, this work is important! We are not a safari operation and don’t want to romanticize the work we do. There will be periods of high intensity when working directly with the animals and other times of less exciting, but 100% necessary tasks, when working on the ranch management aspect of the project.

About Your Location

The volunteer projects are located in and around Chintsa, a stunning little coastal village on the East Coast of South Africa, halfway between Cape Town and Durban. Chintsa has a gorgeous 32 km beach, has no malaria and has loads of activities nearby - from trips into the Wild Coast, to game drives, surf school or just chilling on the beach. Our weather is temperate with warm, dry Winters (May - Oct) and hot, humid Summers with tropical rainstorms (Nov - April). Chintsa is a safe village for volunteers to live in and enjoy (standard safety considerations apply).

Chintsa has a diverse mix of residents from stallwart locals to South African townies moved to the beach for a more relaxed life and returned backpackers and volunteers who have made Chintsa their home. This mix makes Chintsa what is it - a close-knit community that welcomes travellers of all shapes and sizes.

Project Description

The project is divided into three main sections, which you will alternate between throughout your stay:

1) African Wildlife
Volunteers will spend around one third of their time in wildlife environments (commercial and non-commercial game reserves with rhino, giraffe, buffalo, lions, antelope and zebra amongst others). Through lecture-based learning and practical interactions your program will include the following:

- Health and safety
- Immobilisation and tranquilisation of animals
- Game capture *
- Animal management
- Ecosystems services support and biodiversity preservation
- Threats to wildlife
- Toxic and venomous animals
- Animal health and nutrition

* Every effort is made for you to experience
1) at least one game capture, but as this is seasonal and demand-driven, it cannot be guaranteed
2) exposure to rehabilitation of wildlife in a legitimate rehabilitation case (where this is not possible, you will get to experience alternative animal rehabilitation of abused animals such as horses)
3) bush presence during rutting and lambing seasons of African wildlife.

2) Agricultural Livestock
Volunteers will visit a range of livestock farms with bulls, cows, goats, sheep and chickens amongst others to gain maximum "hands-on" working experience as it relates to livestock well-being. Through lecture-based learning and practical interactions your program will include the following:

- Health and safety
- Basic animal health and animal behaviour
- Immobilisation, tranquilisation and inoculation of animals
- Animal management
- Ecosystems services support and biodiversity preservation
- Animal health and nutrition

3) Domestic Animals
Volunteers will visit rural villages and township settlements to undertake "hands on" practical work with a broad range of domesticated animals such as dogs and cats. In the South African context, these animals are very often classified as "vulnerable and abused" and live under extremely difficult circumstances. As a result, they are a high priority for our work. As volunteers and interns, it is also the environment in which you can contribute most effectively to animal welfare in South Africa. Through lecture-based learning and practical interactions your program will include the following:

- Health and safety
- Community support services and understanding animal management in the South African context
- Basic animal health and animal behaviour
- Immobilisation, tranquilisation and inoculation of animals
- Animal health and nutrition

A further component to this sector of your course will be exposure to South Africa’s animal welfare agencies and you will learn of the challenges faced by organizations like the SPCA.

Safety Management

With every new arrival we have a safety and orientation briefing where we discuss issues such as general safety in South Africa for example, what to do in the settlements, where not to go, what to do in case of an emergency, sea currents, HIV AIDS and crime. There is a volunteer co-ordinator with our volunteers at all times while on project to ensure the safety of the children and volunteer. We offer all our volunteers 24/7 support and assistance.

Inclusions

Airport pick-up from East London airport

Three meals a day
Transport to and from your project
24-hour support and supervision
Donation to the project
Certificate of appreciation

Mandatory Volunteer Requirements

Minimum age of 18

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Due to the nature of the Pre-Vet Experience interns work between various reserves, farms and rural villages and are mobilized to where the work is. Program accommodation reacts to this need and interns can expect to stay in a variety of accommodation in the wider Chintsa area. This accommodation will always be comfortable and safe and could include work based tented camps, bush cottages, farm houses and occasionally lodges.
