Day 1: Arequipa - Chivay / Colca Canyon
Get picked up from your accommodation around 7:30 am and begin your journey to one of the deepest canyons in the world. Pass through the natural Reserva Nacional Salinas to view vicuñas, an endangered relative of the llama. Continue on through the wetlands of Tocra where varieties of migratory birds can be seen, among which flamingos. Then pass through the crater of an extinct volcano (Chucura) before stopping at an overlook point at 4,910m for views of distant volcanoes towering over 6,000m in height. Arrive in the village of Chivay around 13:00 to 13:30 pm, check in to your accommodation, and eat a Peruvian lunch. In the afternoon, you will have a few hours to relax at the thermal hot springs of La Calera (optional). Around 20:00 pm, enjoy dinner while watching a folkloric show with local music and dancing.
Day 2: Chivay / Colca Canyon - Puno (B)
Rise early and enjoy a continental breakfast at 6:00 am. Half an hour later, depart to Cruz del Condor viewpoint to admire the steep canyon walls and spot majestic condors over 5 meters in length cruising gracefully and silently overhead. Return to Chivay for lunch, passing through a few local villages along the way such as Pinchollo, Maca and Yanque, which have beautiful colonial churches, as well as the viewpoints of Choquetico and Antahuilque, with breathtaking valley terraces and pre-Inca tombs. Then take your transfer to Puno.
Important: This is a sightseeing tour - you will mostly explore the Colca Canyon by bus. No trekking is included in the canyon.
Suggestions for Colca Canyon: The highest point of the trip is 4,910m and on average the other locations are approx. 3,800m. If you feel sick, it is a good idea to drink plenty of coca tea, chew coca candies or take altitude sickness medicine such as Sarochi or Diamox in extreme cases).
