In the 1990s, the neighbourhood became a sought-after hangout for the city's artists and bohemians, developing into an expensive residential area in the centre of Vilnius, with "a greater concentration of kinky minds in Užupis than in Vilnius." It is sometimes described as Lithuania's answer to Christiania, which is somewhat of an understatement, as people have bought and paid for their property, there is no drug dealing, and the creative environment has become heavily commercialized.
