The cathedral is without a doubt Seville's greatest attraction. It is the largest and tallest church in Spain and the third-largest church in the Christian world after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The church is built in Gothic architectural style and is 116 meters long and 76 meters wide.
"Let us build a church so magnificent that those who see it finished will think we were mad."
This is what the church council is said to have declared when planning the construction of the great cathedral.
The cathedral was completed in 1506 and consists of more than 30 chapels, and even Columbus’ tomb from the 1890s can be found in one of them.
Next to the cathedral stands the impressive 93-meter-tall tower, La Giralda. The tower is undoubtedly the most iconic monument in Seville and was previously used as a lighthouse. The tower is a remnant from the Moorish era and was built in 1184 as a minaret. In 1568, the final part of the tower was added – a bell tower with a total of 25 bells and a large statue serving as a weather vane. The weather vane is called "El Giraldillo," from which the tower gets its name, La Giralda.
It is possible to go all the way to the top and enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the Guadalquivir River.
