Hel town has white, sandy beaches not only in Gdańsk Bay but also from the open sea side. It is one of the most well known Polish bathing sites but also is also a fishing centre, has a navy garrison, yacht marina and passenger harbour. The most popular sites include: the harbour, lighthouse, museums for sea fishery, coast defence and sea weaponry and the seal centre. The town itself is quite picturesque with old 18th and 19th century fisher folk houses.
